In 2023, Avara acquired Family Wallet, one of the most beautifully designed and thoughtfully built wallets in crypto. The acquisition also brought an exceptionally talented design engineering and UX team that now contributes across Aave products, brand, and developer docs, including the Aave App, Aave Pro, Aave Kit, and Aave's broader design system and documentation.
One of the most important outcomes of this acquisition has been the creation of Family Accounts. These are fully white-labelled, embedded wallets that currently power the Family iOS app and serve as infrastructure for the Aave App and Aave Pro, with broader use across Aave products as they launch and scale. Family Accounts have enabled a simple and safer way for new users to access crypto while preserving full control of funds.
Aave Labs has shifted its focus from operating Family as both a standalone wallet and consumer brand to embedding this wallet infrastructure directly within Aave Labs products. In line with this shift, we are winding down the Family iOS app over the coming year. Effective from 1 April, we will no longer onboard new users to Family iOS. Existing users can continue using the app until 1 April 2027, with a year-long grace period. After that, users will continue to have full access to their funds via account.aave.com.
We anticipate a smooth migration for all users. Over time, Family iOS functionality will be limited to account access and withdrawals only. All assets will remain fully controlled through users' existing wallets, and users will be able to access their accounts and manage withdrawals via account.aave.com using their existing credentials.
Family Accounts work for logging into the Aave mobile app for authentication and management, but the app doesn't support a full crypto wallet experience. Users can maintain full control of their assets through users' existing wallets.
Most importantly, this change reflects our belief that future DeFi users will onboard through purpose-built financial experiences, such as saving and borrowing, rather than open-ended wallet explorers. This model supports a more seamless user journey, stronger safety protections, and more intuitive interfaces, while preserving user sovereignty and full control of funds.
Additionally, Aave Labs will no longer use the Avara umbrella brand, under which sat the Family brand as well as Lens, which is now being stewarded by Mask. All current and future products, including the Aave App, Aave Pro, and Aave Kit, will operate under Aave Labs. This change simplifies our brand surface under Aave Labs and focuses our resources on building Aave brand awareness and introducing DeFi to millions of new users globally.
Finally, we want to thank all Family product users for being part of this journey. Family Accounts will continue as core infrastructure within Aave Labs products, and we're very excited to keep bringing Aave and DeFi to mainstream users through simpler, safer, and more focused products.
